Black History Month 2026
This year’s Black History Month theme was "A Century of Black History Commemorations," chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
This theme marks the 100th anniversary of the first Negro History Week launched by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. It highlights the evolution of Black history, culture, and community over the past century, celebrating a long, impactful legacy.

2026 Black History Month in North Brentwood
The Town’s BHM Kickoff event, “Echoes of the Motherland,” on February 7, showcased a drama about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and Langston Hughes presented by Oxon Hill High School. The annual Billion Pool Tournament took place on February 14.
The final BHM month event, on February 28, was a time of reflection (e.g.,honoring the late Rev Jesse Jackson), and celebration of 100 years of BHM. Attendees included event co-host Wanika Fisher, Mayor Petrella, and more. Entertainers included Maestro the Cellist.
